DOWNTOWN DSM FARMERS MARKET
the downtown des moines farmers market is like a carnival for all five senses. the people-watching, breakfast burritos, fresh flowers, mangoes-on-a-stick, adorable puppies, and live music ensure there’s something for everyone.
every time we spend a saturday morning at the farmers market, we stop at mai’s homegrown flowers + vegetables. after trying a wide assortment of flower stands, this one boldly stands out from the rest!
this family cuts all of their flowers from their own backyard at 4 a.m. each saturday morning, ensuring flowers at their absolute peak! i love to see how the arrangements change throughout the season, and at just $10/HUGE bouquet, there’s no reason not to #treatyoself.
and don’t even get me started on the produce! everything you could possibly want to throw into a salad or eat by the handful is ripe for the taking. just this last weekend, we snagged ginormous juicy red tomatoes. how crazy is the color on these? we also grabbed local bread, lettuce, and bacon — and made “locally-grown BLTs”!
a big shoutout goes to orale salsa — their stand boasts salsas of all textures and spice levels, as well as pico de gallo, guacamole, and various savory and sweet jams. this chile verde tomatillo salsa is the perfect complement to a hearty blue corn or sweet potato tortilla chip.
another favorite aspect of the downtown des moines farmers market is the community. one great example: the stand where we picked up tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, and carrots is part of lsi’s global greens farming initiative.
this incredible organization helps immigrants and refugees start their own farms right here in iowa. global greens provides the land and community resources to help these farmers start their own business and learn more about their new country’s agriculture. now that we know about this organization and its mission, we are sure to stop by every time we’re at the market.
